Bitty Bob gets matings from all the hen’s, probably because 1) he has a large red comb, 2) long tarsels 3) big tail, and 4) he will try to steal a mating even when he is not welcome. The last point, I don’t appreciate very well, and especially when it comes to Penelope. When she is out and Bob comes at her and she doesn’t want a mating she comes running to me, or hides under the car all the while making a disconcerting bwaak! On the flip side, sometimes Penelope is all too eager and as Bob comes running to her, she crouches down and lets him clamber on. Not to say there is not any courtship. Bob spends a lot of his day looking at Penelope and sitting on the other side of the aviary, they stare at each, groom while looking at each other and talk to each other. A few days ago, Bob brought Penelope to the best restaurant in town, “The Compost Heap”. Now that’s romance!
Now, it is interesting to note that Bitty Bob’s cousin, Small Bob* was courting Penelope before he gained alpha status.
*Small Bob is the late Cockadoodle Robert II, Esquire. He was alpha for The Territory for about a month, before his untimely death due to vengeful Frankie, the previous territory holder.
Bob peers in at Penelope , while she lays an egg next to battered Rouge. He died of injuries from a vicious attack from Frankie (see Tale of a Rooster Gone Wrong in future posts).
